Scratches on a polyaspartic garage floor coating can happen when sharp metal objects, tools, or heavy equipment drag across the surface. The good news is that most scratches are surface-level and do not affect the integrity or longevity of your coating.
Types of Scratches
1. Surface Scuffs (Most Common)
Surface scratches happen but are not very noticeable when a flake floor system is installed. Surface scratches are most apparent when a solid color system is applied. These scratches typically occur in the clear coat and can come from:
- Dragging heavy storage bins
- Heavy tool drag marks
These scuffs usually appear cloudy or dull but don’t penetrate the coating.
2. Deep Scratches or Gouges
These are less common and occur when something sharp or heavy leaves a defined groove. Examples:
- Dropping a metal engine stand
- Dragging a snowblower blade
- Heavy Motorcycle when kickstands with sharp edges cut into the coating.
If the scratch exposes bare concrete, it should be repaired to prevent moisture intrusion.
How Repairs Work
We can easily repair scratches by:
- Cleaning the affected area
- Light sanding
- Applying a spot repair with matching topcoat
Repairs are generally quick and affordable.
Will Scratches Affect the Lifespan?
Only deep scratches that expose concrete can impact long-term adhesion if ignored. As long as repairs are handled early, your coating’s lifespan remains unchanged.
