All good things come to an end and nothing lasts forever, not even the most durable of floor coatings. Depending on the type of floor coating you get, it can last anywhere from a few years to 30 years. This is impacted by the material, whether or not it was professionally applied, how well you maintain it, and the conditions it’s subjected to. Here is what you need to know about some of the signs that it’s time to get a new floor coating.
#1. It’s Peeling Or Bubbling
This is often seen with garage floor paint or DIY epoxy kits, but it can occur with professional floor coatings too. If your professional floor coating is peeling or bubbling, this not only means that you need a new floor coating, it also means that the original floor coating was not properly installed. Professional floor coatings peel and bubble if the concrete was not properly prepped before application, causing there to be issues with adherence.
However, if your garage floor paint is peeling or bubbling, this is generally quite normal, as paint can rarely withstand the conditions garage floors subject them to for long. Regardless of the type of garage floor coating that you have, peeling and bubbling is a sign that it’s time to obtain a new floor coating.
#2. It’s Changing Color
This is commonly seen with epoxy coatings after they’ve been exposed to UV rays for too long. Epoxy coatings can turn yellow over the years. If you like yellow floors and it works with the room it’s installed in, this may not be too big of a problem for you. However, most people generally don’t like when their floor coating starts changing color on them, as it impacts the look and feel of the entire space.
If you want a floor coating that is UV stable and that won’t change colors on you in the future, you may consider opting for a polyaspartic floor coating over an epoxy coating when you have your new floor coating applied.
#3. It’s Cracking
Depending on the type of floor coating that you have, it may be more or less susceptible to cracking, but regardless, if it’s cracking, this is a surefire sign that it’s sign to replace your floor coating. Floor coatings can crack due to the natural shifting of the earth and how concrete naturally expands and contracts with varying temperatures. Generally, floor coatings can withstand this for a few years. Polyaspartic floor coatings in particular are made to be flexible enough to withstand this natural process.
However, if your floor coating is cracking, you’ll want to be sure to get a new floor coating sooner rather than later. This is because if cracks are left alone, further damage can result from the moisture and dirt and debris that can get into them, not just to your coating, but also to the concrete beneath. This can make the process of getting a new floor coating more intensive, as repairs will be needed before the new coating can be applied.
#4. It’s Uneven
Your floor coating should be nice and smooth and even. One of the major benefits of getting floor coatings is how they can make your floors level and safer to walk on, after all. However, as time goes by and your floor coating is subjected to impact and traffic, it can start to wear down. If you find yourself tripping on dips in your floor coating, it’s best to get a new one, before anyone potentially gets injured.
Unevenness can also result from poor installation. Watch this space, as in our next blog, we will discuss the telltale signs of a bad installation job and how to pick a floor coating company that you can trust to look out for you and do their work properly.
#5. Standing Water Is A Regular Occurrence
It’s only natural to spill sometimes, but many floor coatings make wiping spills up easy. However, if you find that there’s standing water on your floor coating and nothing spilled, this could be because of a couple of different problems with your floor coating. The first is that it either wasn’t properly sealed or that the seal is failing. The second is that you have a vapor issue that is making its way up through your floor coating. Regardless, you’ll need a new floor coating in either case.
